Der Song war von Tommy geschrieben und hieß eigentlich ‘Animal Hop’. Ein Hop war in den 50ern ein Tanz auf einem High School-Ball. Es war ursprünglich ein sehr unschuldiger Song und als Antwort auf einen Hit der Bay City Rollers gedacht. Dee Dee änderte nicht nur den Titel in Blitzkrieg Bop, sonder auch den Text. Aus ‘They are shouting in the back’, also ‘sie singen hinten im Tanzsaal’, wurde schießt ihnen in den Rücken, ‘shoot them in the back now’.
